Calm Bathroom Design: Lighting, Color and Materials for a Sensory-Friendly Space

How lighting, color, texture, sound and layout make a bathroom feel calm — the ideas behind our Safe Haven bathroom design in Chicago.

A bathroom is often the first room you use in the morning and the last at night. With a few deliberate choices, it can be the calmest room in the house. These are the ideas behind our Safe Haven bathroom design.

Light you can adjust

Layered, dimmable lighting lets the same room feel bright and clear in the morning and soft and warm at night. Warmer color temperatures in the evening, light at face level instead of only overhead, and a low night light all help.

Soft, muted color

Muted, nature-inspired tones settle the eye. Large areas of very bright white or high-contrast patterns can feel busy; save bold pattern for one feature wall if you love it.

Comforting textures

Warm wood, honed or matte stone and textured tile feel softer than high-gloss surfaces, and they hide water spots better too.

Quiet

A properly sized, quiet exhaust fan, soft-close drawers and lids, and finishes that reduce echo make a surprising difference.

An uncluttered layout

Closed storage, recessed niches in the shower and room to sit — a bench or a stool — keep the space simple and comfortable.

Calm design is a set of choices rather than extra scope, so it fits any budget. See it in our bathroom remodeling work or plan a calmer bathroom.

Use adjustable, layered lighting, soft muted colors, warm and matte textures, a quiet exhaust fan and an uncluttered layout with closed storage.

Not necessarily. Most of it comes down to selections — lighting, color, finishes and a quieter fan — rather than extra work.
