How Long Does a Kitchen Remodel Take? A Realistic Chicago Timeline

A realistic kitchen remodel timeline for Chicago homes and condos: design, selections, permits, 4–6 weeks of construction, and what causes delays.

Most homeowners ask about construction time, but the calendar really starts with the first design conversation. Here is how a full kitchen remodel unfolds with us, and where the time goes.

The short answer

A full gut kitchen remodel with a new layout typically takes 4–6 weeks of construction. Add time before that for design, selections and any permits, and allow for material lead times — cabinets and stone are the usual pacing items.

Phase by phase

  • Consultation and measuring. We visit, measure, look at the structure and utilities, and talk about how you use the kitchen.
  • Design and selections. You work directly with your designer on layout, cabinets, counters, tile, fixtures and lighting. Starting from one of our models speeds this up.
  • Fixed-price proposal and ordering. Once the scope is final, materials are ordered. Custom cabinetry is usually the longest lead time, so we order it early.
  • Permits and approvals. If plumbing, electrical or structure changes, a permit is needed; condos also need board approval. We handle both — see Chicago remodeling permits.
  • Construction (4–6 weeks). Demolition, rough plumbing and electrical, inspections where required, drywall, cabinets, templating and installing counters, backsplash, fixtures and appliances.
  • Final walkthrough. We go through every detail with you before we call it finished.

What causes delays

  • Changing selections after materials are ordered.
  • Backordered appliances or special-order tile.
  • Hidden conditions behind walls in older Chicago homes, such as outdated wiring or plumbing.
  • Building rules in condos and high-rises that limit work hours or elevator access.

Our approach is to make decisions early, order long-lead items first, and tell you right away if something unexpected shows up — along with your options.

Living through a kitchen remodel

Before demolition, pick a spot — a dining room corner or the basement — and stock it as a stand-in kitchen: a folding table, the microwave, the coffee setup and a toaster oven. Plan simple meals for the construction weeks and keep a bin of everyday dishes out of the work zone. It is a few weeks of inconvenience for a kitchen you will use every day for years.
